Candle Work
Subtle light for doing magic at night (mundane level). Candles are charged to contain energy and act as small batteries to empower spells. Heat serves in the long run to help release the magnetic energy which is generated during magical working. Heating a magnet releases some of its charge (physical) so this is true on the magical (metaphysical) level, too. Candles also used in magic to represent person or situation that the spell is designed to influence. In such cases a symbolically colored candle links to the nature of the work you are doing with spell-casting. If the candle represents a person, then the color should reflect something of that person (age, birthdate, etc.). Same is true for any given situation (reflective of the nature of the magic’s target). Some witches like to use candles in the image of man or woman when performing magic with another person. Some anoint and name it after the person for whom it is intended. All of this helps to focus the mind.

Can be anointed with oil, cologne, etc. Words then spoken over the candle such as:
I name you _____
You are _____

I name you “prosperity”
You are “money”

When you speak, you infuse the energy into the candle for the magical purpose. The way in which the candle is used varies based on many factors. Typically the candle is anointed on both ends towards the center (attraction) or center outward (banishing).

Additional power can come from dried herbs that you roll the candle toward you (attraction) or away from you (banishing).

Hollow out the bottom, put small piece of the herb or oil and seal with wax.

Candle can be notched into sections. Each section marks off one hour or one day. Candle can build up energy. Direct energy at an event. The manifestation happens after the last notch has burned (if 7 notches for 7 days, then the manifestation happens on the 8th day).

Candle is the key or the physical link to the influence and point of focus for the power of your mind. These are tools. By themselves, they have no magical ability. They help focus your mind.

Burn only candles of wax, not from the killing of an animal. Beeswax is acceptable because it doesn’t involve killing animals.

Trim wick to about an 1/8th inch.

Freeze candles for an hour to prevent dripping. After freezing them no more then overnight.

Offertory candles are spell candles.
Altar candles (working candles) are one or two white candles when you perform candle magic which are always lit before doing the candle magic. These can be place in the corners in the back of the altar.
Astral candles are the ones that represent the petitioner. See list above.
Day candles can be used in any spell to give more power and focus

Mandatory Steps

  1. Collect materials for spell
  2. Ground and center (tap into energy from earth or universe)
  3. Cast circle
  4. May call in Quarters
  5. Call in a specific deity that associates with that characteristic. God and Goddess do not need to be there unless you are actively using their support
  6. Do spell
  7. Leave an offering for gods and goddesses (24 hours on altar). Clearly communicate that it is for the god or goddess.
  8. Dismiss, open circle, ground (eat food)

Incense
Wisp of one’s magic. The flux of the thoughts, the medium of the mind, shaping and reshaping of consciousness. Rising and dispersing of smoke has magic. Substance and environment for one’s thoughts to materialize. Provides vehicle or propulsion by which one can transmit into the astral dimension. The magical use of incense:
Conditions the mind by stimulating smell
Draws spirits through magical associations and astral connections
Raises or lifts energy of the spell up to the ether (astral plane)

Memory pathways are created by the sense of the incense. Advantage is that specific scents can invoke previous states of consciousness because you’ve imprinted that into your mind. Type of incense burned must correspond to the nature of the magical work being done. For example, love spells incorporate incense of Venus. Drawing on various sources of power contributes to building up a significant energy charge without depleting your own energy. Incense can be used to add power to candles. Passing the candle 3 times in a clockwise manner through the smoke helps to create the alignment in your mind of the corresponding powers upon whose aid your are calling.

Oils
Similar to incense because of the sense of smell. In addition and more importantly, they have the ability to hold magical charges for long periods of time. When an object is anointed with charged oils, it becomes charged as well — contagion magic. Example: Sugar sweetens whatever it is in. It has a lesser thing, but has a profound effect on the great thing.

Candles are anointed with oil. Concentration of the intention is the most important point of contagion magic.

Oils add power to the spell. The spellcaster as well as the candles should be anointed if it is appropriate to the spell. Example: Anoint a green candle AND your pulse points on your wrists and neck. As a witch, you should have on hand a variety of oils for a later use previously charged. This helps if you are physically or energetically tired. Oils can aid in increasing power. Do not store in sunlight because sunlight can weaken the power in the oil.

Herb cabinet
Herbs (with date because they only last about a year/year and a half)
Oils
Feathers
Parchment paper
